Aching Tired Legs? It Could Be Varicose Veins

For a few people, bulging, discolored varicose veins are only a cosmetic concern. If you have symptoms like aching or heaviness in your legs, you should schedule a vein screening with a vein expert like Dr. Dohner. These symptoms could indicate a deeper problem with the venous circulation in your legs.

Aching Legs? It Could Be Varicose Veins

Many of us experience some aches and pains after a busy day. If your legs ache enough to bother you, or if they ache even after resting, you may have varicose veins. Not all problems with veins show on the surface of the skin. If you have these symptoms, you may have an underlying problem that requires treatment to prevent it from progressing:

  • Aching
  • Tiredness
  • Heaviness
  • Throbbing
  • Leg cramps
  • Swelling
  • Restless legs
  • Ulcers or open sores on the lower legs

Treating varicose veins early can prevent symptoms from getting worse. Treatment restores healthy circulation in the legs, resolving your aching and discomfort.

What are Varicose Veins?

As blood travels through the leg veins back to the heart, one-way valves prevent it from pooling and collecting inside the veins. If these valves become damaged, gravity will cause backflow in the veins. Pooled blood causes the affected veins and those connected to them to expand and bulge. Over time, this compromised blood flow can lead to circulation problems.

How are Varicose Veins Treated?

Dr. Dohner will conduct a full vein assessment and choose a treatment method that will work best for you. He may use more than one treatment to achieve the best symptom relief and most aesthetically pleasing results.

Endovenous Laser Treatments (EVLT)

This treatment works on the underlying feeder veins that cause varicose veins. A thin fiber inside the vein sends energy pulses into the vein walls. This seals the vein, causing it to collapse and rerouting the blood to normal veins. The surface problem veins will gradually fade, although ambulatory phlebectomy can speed up the process.

Ambulatory Phlebectomy

During this treatment, freckle-sized openings in the skin are used to access the problem vein with special tools. Dr. Dohner removes this section of the vein, allowing other healthy veins to take up the job of the damaged one. This treatment works alone or removes unsightly veins remaining after other treatment methods.

Varithena® and Ultrasound-Guided Sclerotherapy

Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy uses ultrasound to precisely inject a sclerosing foam into the problem vein. This works especially well for veins that are difficult to reach with other methods. The foam will damage the vein walls, causing them to seal closed. Varithena® is an FDA-approved foam used to close off these problem veins if larger.

What is Recovery Like After Varicose Vein Treatment?

You will have little recovery time after these treatments. Walking daily will improve your healing and keep your circulation healthy. You may have compression garments to wear to encourage the treated veins to close. You can return to most normal activities within a few days.
