How Can You Prevent Skin Cancer?

Our skin is a living organ that protects us from the outside world. Skin cancer forms when skin cells divide abnormally. Abnormal cell growth often occurs because the DNA of the cells has been damaged. Ultraviolet (UV) light can harm skin cells and increase your risk of skin cancer. While you cannot eliminate your risk of skin cancer, you can take steps to decrease it.

What is Skin Cancer?

Skin cancer occurs when skin cells begin to divide in an abnormal way. Damage to a cell’s DNA can cause it to divide too fast or to grow in unusual ways. Most skin cancers grow slowly and have a low risk of spreading to other parts of the body, but some can become dangerous if not treated early. Any lesions or spots on the skin that look unusual should get checked by a dermatologist.

How Can You Prevent Skin Cancer?

We face the most common cause of skin cancer every time we step outdoors. A tan might look healthy, but in reality, it means your skin is responding to injury by producing melanin pigments. UV light can start damaging the skin long before you notice signs of a sunburn.

Even on overcast days, UV rays from the sun or reflected off other surfaces can cause damage to our skin. Preventing skin cancer means limiting UV exposure.

  • Wear a broad spectrum sunscreen on exposed skin every day
  • Be aware of UV light on cold or cloudy days
  • Protect yourself from UV light reflected off surfaces like snow, water, or sand
  • Wear a hat and clothing that covers your face and exposed skin
  • Avoid the sun during the hours when the sun is most directly overhead

Types of Skin Cancer

The three major types of skin cancer are squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Squamous and basal cell carcinomas grow slowly and rarely spread to other areas, but you should have them removed since they will continue to grow. Melanoma develops from pigment-producing cells and may look like an unusual or rapidly changing mole.

How Do I Know If I Might Have Skin Cancer?

You can help prevent skin cancer by examining your skin regularly and becoming familiar with your usual marks and spots. While everyone has some of these, you should see a dermatologist if you notice new ones or any that suddenly start to change. If you notice changes in the color, size, or shape of a mole or lesion, have a professional look at it.

How is Skin Cancer Treated?

When located early in its development, skin cancer can usually be removed entirely.  Suspected skin cancer may be treated with a punch or shave biopsy that removes the lesion and sends it for analysis. If necessary, surgical excision can remove most skin cancers altogether.
