While dilated hand veins are usually a sign they are healthy, many people find them unattractive and an extremely visible sign of their age. In many cases, the issue is superficial only, but bulging hand veins may signify an underlying medical condition. It’s important to have your hand veins looked at by a professional like Dr. Dohner at New York Skin & Vein.Â
Prominent hand veins are fairly common and can show for a variety of reasons. The most prevalent source of hand vein prominence is age. As the years go by, our skin thins, loses elasticity and loses soft tissue volume. Loss of body fat can also make veins more noticeable. Exercise elevates blood pressure, pushing the veins to the surface. Some people are genetically disposed to noticeable hand veins.Â
The first step is to schedule an in-person consultation with one of our highly trained providers at New York Skin & Vein Center located in Oneonta, NY, serving the surrounding New York areas with additional offices in Norwich, Binghamton, Cobleskill and Oneonta.

New York Skin & Vein has a few different hand vein treatment options, depending on your specific vein concerns and treatment goals.
Sclerotherapy is the gold standard in the treatment of spider veins and is one of the easiest treatments, involving a medication injected into the veins to irritate the vein lining, which closes the vein and reroutes blood to other vessels.
Ambulatory phlebectomy is an ideal treatment for the removal of bigger, bulging veins. Using local anesthesia and making tiny incisions, Dr. Dohner uses a specialized surgical instrument on the questionable veins. The veins are removed entirely and the incisions heal quickly. There are no stitches needed with this treatment.
Results vary by treatment, but most hand vein patients will see results immediately following their procedure, with continued noticeable improvements for the weeks following treatment as the treated veins are naturally absorbed by your body. A combination of hand vein treatments may be recommended for best results depending on the type of veins and amount of volume loss to the hands.
There is little to no downtime with any of our hand vein treatments, although some of the more invasive treatment options may cause some mild bruising and swelling for several days. Dr. Dohner and his team will work with you on a specific post-treatment recovery plan.
