Veins that bulge and become darker and more visible are usually caused by age. Decreased body fat can also cause this appearance, and some people may have a genetic tendency to develop these veins.
New York Skin and Vein: now part of Schweiger Dermatology Group offers two treatments for these veins on the hands:
This treatment uses an FDA-approved sclerosing agent. This solution is injected into the problem veins. This causes the walls of the vein to collapse so no blood can flow through. The blood will find other, healthier veins to travel through. The body reabsorbs the collapsed vein, causing it to fade or disappear.
With ambulatory phlebectomy, Dr. Dohner will make tiny incisions over the area of the problem vein and remove the vein. You will only need local numbing medication, and you will not need any stitches. Our specialized method of performing this procedure results in the smallest possible incisions and effective removal of the vein.
The first step is to schedule an in-person consultation with one of our highly trained providers at New York Skin & Vein Center located in Oneonta, NY, serving the surrounding New York City areas with additional offices in Norwich, Binghamton, and Cobleskill.

You may be instructed to wear a compression bandage for a few days to help make sure the vein has collapsed and to redirect the blood flow. You may feel some minor discomfort for a few days after either procedure and some itching or irritation in the area of sclerotherapy. You will be able to resume most normal activities but should avoid doing heavy lifting or other activities that might stress hand veins.
You can expect to see your hands look smoother and younger, with no more bulging, discolored veins to hide. Ambulatory phlebectomy removes the vein completely, and sclerotherapy causes the vein to be absorbed by the body.
You can also expect improved self-confidence since you will now be able to let people see your hands without feeling uncomfortable. If you used to hide your hands because of these unsightly veins, you will now feel free to let everyone see them.
You may be a good candidate for one of these treatments if you have bulging veins on your hands that bother you or cause you discomfort. We suggest you not smoke, as this worsens circulatory problems.
