What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy treats spider veins and small varicose veins by sealing them off and allowing them to be absorbed by your body. This simple procedure may be the treatment of choice for small varicose veins or any spider veins, although Dr. Dohner will decide on the ideal method of treatment for your condition.

Sclerotherapy Binghamton

What is Sclerotherapy?

This non-surgical treatment works by closing off your problem veins to prevent abnormal backwards blood flow. Blood will naturally find other routes, and the body will break down and absorb the now unused vein.

How Does Sclerotherapy Work?

The word “sclero” means “hard” or “thickened,” and a sclerosing agent is one that Dr. Dohner injects into your problem vein that causes the vein walls to harden. As a result, the vein collapses, and blood stops flowing through it.

Some people wonder where the blood goes if a doctor cuts off the blood flow through a vessel, but fortunately, our bodies have thousands of mile of veins that take over for the treated one.

What is Sclerotherapy Like?

Dr. Dohner will inject an advanced FDA-approved sclerosing medication  in your problem vein, resulting in irritation, scarring, and closing off of the vein. Your body should absorb most of the pigment from this vein within three to five weeks.

What Results Will I See From Sclerotherapy?

Most people will need more than one treatment to clear up their problem veins and keep them away. Three to four treatments will complete the process for most people, but Dr. Dohner will provide you with a timeline for how many visits you can expect. While the treated vein will not come back, new spider veins can form at a later time.

Is There Any Downtime With Sclerotherapy?

After sclerotherapy, you will need to wear a compression stocking for two weeks. This not only helps to collapse the vein but helps to redirect blood flow and control any swelling. You can resume most activities the same day, and Dr. Dohner will encourage you to walk around as much as possible to promote healthy blood flow.

You will need to avoid sun exposure during your recovery time, as the sun can darken the treated veins instead of fading them. In addition, you should avoid hot tubs during the two weeks you wear the compression stocking.

Am I A Candidate For Sclerotherapy?

If you have bothersome spider veins or varicose veins, you may be a good candidate for this treatment. Sclerotherapy treats these conditions with a minimally invasive procedure that has people back on their feet immediately.
