Hair loss is a common, yet embarrassing concern for both men and women. When a patient is struggling with hair loss, dermatologists have found that the earlier you address it, the greater the chance to restore your hair. That’s why the team at Schweiger Dermatology Group, led by Dr. Eric Dohner, is here to help you restore your hair back to its original state.
Hair loss is a multifactor concern. A full assessment of your health and hair is required before any treatment can be recommended. . An examination of your scalp and hair must also be performed to rule out inflammatory, autoimmune or other causes. Blood work for hormonal and thyroid status, vitamin levels, iron levels, etc are usually necessary too.
Hair loss can be the result of genetics, extreme stress or shock to the body, toxic substances (like radiation or chemotherapy), hormonal changes, or autoimmune conditions such as alopecia areata.
The first step is to schedule an in-person consultation with one of our highly trained providers at New York Skin & Vein Center located in Oneonta, NY, serving the surrounding New York areas with additional offices in Norwich, Binghamton, Cobleskill and Oneonta.

If your hair loss is not due to a medical problem then the two most common causes are Telogen Effluvium (TE) and Androgenetic Alopecia (AGA).
Telogen effluvium is stress related hair loss and frequently occurs after child birth, surgery, an accident or stressful life event like a divorce. The hair follicles go into a rest phase and stop producing hair shafts. This manifests by seeing lots of hair in the shower drain without discrete areas of hair loss on your scalp. The hair may appear to be thinner overall. This condition usually resolves by itself but if not then minoxidil, vitamins, or PRP can help. Women are most affected by TE.
Androgenetic hair loss can affect both men and women and can be seen at the same time as TE. AGA is caused by an excessive response to androgens. Treatments include finasteride, minoxidil, spironolactone, and low level LED light therapy.
Hair growth can be stimulated with PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy. PRP is a treatment that uses the growth factors and nutrients found in your own blood. The platelets in your blood are separated, then this rich concentrate is injected into the scalp, promoting massive stimulation for hair growth. This treatment is effective and natural because it uses your own blood to restore your hair.
There are proprietary vitamin regimens that can help with hair loss, the most popular being Nutrafol. The way that they help is fuzzy but worth a try.
Low level LED light therapy has been proven to grow hair. The system that we like best is Revian which increases blood flow, reduces inflammation, and inhibits dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which is a major culprit in AGA. This system uses a light weight helmet that you wear for ten minutes a day and is linked to your phone for reminders to use it. Best of all it comes with a money back guarantee! All treatments for hair loss take 4 to 12 weeks to see results. Patients who receive PRP for hair loss can expect to see restored growth of their hair. You’ll notice your hair growth improving 4-6 weeks following your treatment. For best results, you should expect to receive monthly treatments for 3 months. To maintain results, most patients will receive follow-up treatments every 3-12 months after their initial treatment. Revian users start to see results in 4 to 8 weeks.
No, you won’t experience any downtime with PRP or Revian for hair restoration.
