Actinic keratosis is a scaly, raised skin patch that is the result of sun exposure and damage. While they generally start out as small and only noticeable by touch, they can grow in size and potentially be a sign of something more serious.
The team at New York Skin & Vein Center is committed to getting to the bottom of your problems as soon as possible. You do not need a referral from your doctor to get started today! We accept most insurances, including both Empire and Medicare. One of our friendly staff members will be able to assist you regarding your insurance and payment options before your initial consultation. We are unable to accept Medicaid or Fidelis at this time.
A precursor to skin cancer, actinic keratosis can be caused by overexposure to UV rays and in many cases they can be an early indicator of possible skin cancer. For this reason, it’s important to get any scaly patch checked out right away.
The first step is to schedule an in-person consultation with one of our highly trained providers at New York Skin & Vein Center located in Oneonta, NY, serving the surrounding New York areas with additional offices in Norwich, Binghamton, Cobleskill and Oneonta.

Cryotherapy is the traditional way to treat AK’s. Using liquid nitrogen to freeze smaller areas of AK’s, new healthy skin grows at the spot. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) can be used as a comprehensive AK treatment for much bigger areas of skin involvement including your whole face, scalp, hands, and forearms. Topical creams can also be used for midsized areas of AK involvement. Your treatment can be customized based on the location and severity of your condition.
Cryotherapy, PDT, and creams are designed to treat these scaly, rough patches very quickly after treatment. Additionally, our treatments will include an examination of the removed skin to ensure that your actinic keratosis patches aren’t indicators of something more serious, like skin cancer.
You should expect minimal downtime following your actinic keratoses treatment. You should, however, be very careful to protect your skin from additional UV exposure by using sunscreen when you go outside.
