Veins that do not cause the problems of varicose veins are considered spider veins and are considered purely cosmetic. Although spider veins are considered unattractive, they are not dangerous. They can appear as tiny red thread-like veins (Telangiectasias), or be darker blue flat veins (Blue Reticular Veins). When treating spider veins, it’s essential to also address the Reticular Veins sometimes known as ‘feeder veins’. Spider vein removal is a quick and easy in-office procedure with little to no downtime.
At New York Skin & Vein Centers, we offer two unique options. Both have their advantages and depending on your individual needs, one may be better suited for you than the other. When removing spider veins, you can opt for Sclerotherapy or you may decide 1064 Nd:Yag Laser Treatments are more up your alley.
Sclerotherapy is the most popular choice when it comes to removing spider veins. The procedure is faster, very comfortable, and more economical. The process entails a number of micro-injections directly into the troublesome vein. Dr. Dohner uses an advanced foam sclerotherapy technique to ensure an optimal outcome with fewer sessions.
The 1064 Nd:Yag Laser is typically used for treating the tiniest spider veins or spider veins that don’t respond well to sclerotherapy. Focused laser light energy penetrates the surface of the skin targeting bothersome veins and sealing them shut. The vein is no longer able to carry blood rendering them more difficult to see.
VeinGogh uses Microburst technology and instantly eliminates the tiniest of red spider veins. VeinGogh can safely treat any skin type, including tanned skin. No anesthesia is required and it clears any vessels the laser and sclero can leave behind. Results are Immediate and usually only a single treatment is required.

Patients who are unhappy with the appearance of spider veins on the upper or lower legs may be a good candidate for the procedure. Patients considering sclerotherapy should commit to a series of at least three sessions if they’d like to see significant results. Unlike laser treatments, sclerotherapy is safe and effective for darker-toned skin.
Laser treatments are better suited for those who are prone to allergic reactions to medications or needle-phobic patients and for the smallest of spider veins.
Treatment times can vary based on a number of factors including the severity of your condition, the number of veins being addressed, and the method you’ve chosen for removal. In most cases, you can expect to be in and out of the office within the hour.
You can start to see some improvement within 3-5 days after your initial sclerotherapy session. Continued improvement will gradually occur over time and with continued treatments. Larger veins can take longer to resolve than smaller thread-like veins. Treatments are done approximately every 4-6 weeks until your goals have been reached. Results from laser treatments often take longer making them more costly in the long run.
There is little to no downtime with either sclerotherapy, 1064 Nd:Yag laser treatments, or VanGogh Treatments. You may be asked to wear compression socks or stockings for the first 24-48 hours following your appointment. Side effects may include redness, swelling, tenderness, and/or slight bruising but should subside within 3-7 days. Dr. Dohner will provide you with detailed recovery instructions at the time of your consultation.
